World On A String

While I was away, World On A String premiered it's fifth and final chapter at the opening of the Bead Museum of Washington D.C.'s Exhibit: Celebrating Beads. From the producers of World On A String:

"World On A String tells the remarkable story of human history through one of mankind's tiniest creations... the bead. It is an awesome saga spanning some 75,000 years. The project has been a labor of love for its producer, Diana Friedberg - an industry award-winning film editor and producer - for over a decade."

There are five parts to this series and the fifth and final episode is now available. See the YouTube preview below and visit the website by clicking on the title above.

Greetings from Beadweaver!

Greetings friends! As you probably have noticed, I've been away from my keyboard for over a month....largely because I have been in South Africa :) I had a wonderful time touring the country and catching up with old friends. I hope to post some photos online as soon as the fog clears from my head...

In other news (lots to catch up on here!)... Louise Hill, of Louise Hill's Designs had her piece "Worn Without Thorns" accepted into the Bead Museum of D.C's Celebrating Beads exhibit. Louise received Best in Show for Use of Shape, shared the People's Choice Award with Timothy Meikle, and placed second in the Seed Bead category. WOW Congratulations Louise! Read more about this event by clicking here.

Did you know Beadventures is changing hands? Cheryl Coburn Brown who has run the company since 1994 is retiring from the business. The new owner is Cheryl Frasca, an accomplished bead artist from Alaska. You can read more at the Beadventures website.

Diane Hyde has just launched her Gallery which features a selection of her works and kits. If you didn't already know, Diane runs a successful business called "Designer's Findings" where you can find a variety of hard-to-find findings for creating one of a kind designs. Diane specializes in Art Nouveau and Vintage styles. She's also a great resource for brass support blanks for bead embroidered jewelry. Be sure to check out her gallery and her wares!

In other news, Liza Lou opened her newest exhibit at L&M Arts in New York City, September 24th. Known for her painstakingly large beaded works (including a mile long beaded rope), Liza employs women from a local beadwork collective in Durban, South Africa to help bring her creations to life. To see images from the exhibit, click here.

Speaking of bead artists, Lark Books -known for it's image rich "500" series- has just released its newest addition to its "Masters" series: Masters: Beadweaving. Written by Carol Wilcox Wells, this latest beading book features the work of 40 bead artists. The Master's series differs from the 500 series in that the work of each artist is accompanied by a short essay which reviews the artist's style. Masters: Beadweaving is currently available from Amazon.com

The Power of Beading

The Power of Beading Contest & Charity Fundraiser is the brainchild of well known bead artist Kerrie Slade and is being held in collaboration with Beading Daily. The contest involves submitting a personal story about beading and how it has helped you through a challenging time. Deadline for submission is September 12th. Winners will be announced on Beading Daily and will receive one of Kerrie Slade's Ribbon Awareness Pins.

The Charity Fundraiser was designed in honor of Kerrie's mother who has breast cancer. Funds raised from the purchase of Kerrie's Ribbon Awareness pattern will be donated to two charities: The Wellness Community and the American Institute of Cancer Research.
