F.A.Cup - Burton Hold Mighty United

The conference side burton albion held Manchester United to a goalless draw at pirelli stadium. Sir Alex, perhaps over obsessed by giving his stars a breather after gruelling premiership fixtures over the holiday season, chose a very young and inexperienced side against burton. His tactics seem to have once again proven wrong as United added another 90 minutes of cup football in their already packed schedule.

United Held By Birmingham

The premiership it seems, is well and truly over. Manchester United are held to a 2-2 draw by Birmingham city in an entertaining encounter. United were first to find the net when Ruud put them ahead in 7th minute. Birmingham drew level 15 minutes later through Jamie clapham but really that goal shouldn't have stood as Ronaldo was fouled clearly seconds before the goal was scored but referee Howard Webb failed to spot it or just ignored the foul.

Rest of the first half, United were on the back foot as Birmingham were winning every 50-50 ball on the pitch. United had more purpose in the second half and Rooney went close just minutes after the restart when his long shot just flew wide of the goal. Rooney however did score 10 minutes later. Ruud van Nistelrooy did a great dummy in the area to put Rooney through who finished with venom.

At 2-1 up and United controlling the game, you would have forgiven to think that Birmingham will be rolled over. Then came another mistake by United defense which has haunted the side whole season. They failed to clear a Birmingham free kick and the ball fell kindly to Walter Pandiani who obliged from 2 yards out 11 minutes from time. United brought on Ryan Giggs, Park and Ole gunnar Solsjkaer to get a win but Birmingham defense stood firm. Chelsea won their away game at Manchester City and are now 11 points clear of United. That result made sure that Chelsea will be crowned champions of England for the second year running come May.

On this defensive display United cant wait to get the new boy Nemanja Vidic at the earliest possible. That however will not happen until the January transfer window opens. One bit of good news for United was the return of Norwegian legend Ole gunnar Solsjkaer after injury hell of almost two years.

United Agree Fees For Vidic

Serbia and Montenegro defender Nemanja Vidic is set to join United from Spartak Moscow during the January transfer window as both clubs finalized the fees and formalities. Vidic was part of Serbia and Montenegro team which qualified for the world cup from their group in first place conceding only 1 goal. The collective defense is known as "THE FAMOUS FOUR". United manager Alex Ferguson is delighted with the signing as he rates vidic very highly and considering Liverpool and Fiorentina both were in the running, its an excellent signing. In the end it came to the player, who he wants to play for and he chose United over the European champions.

United do have more than enough cover in the defense but in recent weeks, Mikael Silvestre has looked very vulnerable and Wes Brown is injury prone. Vidic is also good in the air and might be the long term partner for Rio Ferdinand in defense. Vidic is also said to be good in the opponents penalty area and can score, something United have missed ever since Jaap Stam was so cruelly sold. Rio Ferdinand recently broke his duck after 140 games without a goal and also scored one today as United demolished West Brom Albions but really he is not a regular goal getter in mould of John Terry for example from defense. Lets hope vidic turns out to be a good solution to the defensive frailties that have haunted United this season.

United Start Festive Season With a Bang

Manchester United outdid, outmuscled and outclassed sorry West Brom in their boxing day clash as they romped to 3-0 victory over their midland rivals. Goals by Paul Scholes, second in three by Rio Ferdinand and a routine header by Ruud Van Nistelrooy provided the festive season gift for the 67000 strong crowd.

The match started on very slow pace as both teams took time to settle in. United however found themselves ahead by the combination of faith and fortune. West Brom lost their best defender Robinson due to a freak collision with his own team mate. United took the advantage straight away as Rio Ferdinand went on the spanking run from his own half, through interchanging passes with excellent Park Ji-Sung and crossing from the right. Park took the ball in his strides before setting it up for paul scholes who struck a sweet left footed shot bottom left corner of the goal from the edge of the area. United doubled their lead on 45 minutes as Rio Ferdinand towered above everyone else to head home a Ryan Giggs cross. But it was really poor defending by sorry albions.

The second half was as dead as the first in opening exchanges, both teams trying to conserve energy for tough festive period fixtures. Ruud Van Nistelrooy however did manage to get his customary goal. Alan Smith, who was just introduced on the pitch in place of Paul Scholes, set up an easy header for Ruud with a peach of a cross from his first touch. That's 16 goals for the season for the brilliant Dutchman. He was substituted just after scoring to conserve the energy for the Wednesday's game against Birmingham city. From their on, the game dried up as both teams started to stroll on the pitch and save some energy as the result was already assured. Chelsea's win earlier in the day meant United are still 9 points behind the leaders but on current form, its about time they got closer to them.
