It is coming up on the holidays here in the states and of course the TV is being bombarded by Christmas/Holiday commercials. I started my shopping last month and I am trying to be frugal..which is hard for me. I want to buy everyone a gift and spend a lot of money. But with the way the economy is going right now, I need to save my money for art supplies!!! I am telling everyone to get me gift certificates to craft/art stores, so I will keep up with all the new and fancy art stuff that is coming out. There is so much out there I get soooo overwhelmed.

Another good holiday idea is I buy myself workshops to attend. I tell my family that I have a couple of online workshops I have been eyeing and they can purchase that for me too!!! Also the new Arrowmont catalog came out last week and it was cool seeing my class listed there with all of the other wonderful artists! I wish I had the money to just travel and take workshops at all of these wonderful art schools.

Fiber Collage Workshop Jan 6th and 7th

For anyone that lives close to me and would like to take a Fiber Collage/Art quilt class, I will be having one in January. The cost is 120.00 and it runs 10-4 on the 10th and 17th of January. This is basically a beginner class on how to construct an art quilt and no sewing experience is needed. Also, all the sewing is done by hand, so you won't need a sewing machine.

News from the Nest

It is really crazy around the studio this month. We are getting ready for Open Studios that is Oct. 31-Nov. 2. I hope those of you that live near me will stop by and say "hey"!! Check out the details on the Greenville Open Studios website.

I am trying to finish up small pieces to sell and work on the yard of the Little House. Hopefully we will make a little money, but with the US economy....I am better off selling gas! I hope everyone else is out there surviving the financial crisis...thank goodness for the therapy of art.

I am getting ready to head out this weekend to teach a Fiber Collage Workshop in Jacksonville, Florida. Now for those of you who have taken my online class, you will be amazed that I am doing this workshop in 2 days...so I hope my student's fingers don't fall off!! I am going to cram in a lot of information in a short amount of time...I hope I don't forget anything.  It is going to be awesome to be with other fiber artists and being able to commune in a creative atmosphere.

I hope there is lots of coffee...we will need the energy!

If you have joined my new website that I have created for Fiber artists and Mixed media artists, please check it out.

It is free to join and you can upload photos and start a blog. Now I have added a Chat option on the front page for everyone to reach out and talk to each other. Also there are badges you can add to your websites.

If you are interested is an ad on the site, this would be a great way to promote your supplies,blogs, e-zines, shows and classes. To sign up for an ad, there is a paypal button on the right side of the site near the bottom of the page. I am hoping to get the advertisers together and go in for some print ads in some of the fiber art magazines.

Orphan Works Bill in US Legislature

I got an email from Phyliss Dobbs on the bill that is coming up to help protect copyrights for artwork and photos.

I don’t know if you are aware of the Orphan Works bills and how devastating passage of either bill will be to copyright protection and all the photos that we post on the internet.  Since there are so many photos on this forum, the members really stand to loose their copyright protection of the photos and designs as well.  If you are unaware of these bills, I can provide you with more information. 

 Please read the following that I am sending out on a new list group.  If there are others in the forum that you think would like to join, please pass this on to them.

 If there is one good thing that has come about due to Orphan Works Legislation, it is that artists and designers worldwide have come together in solidarity to make our voices heard. With 80 groups now opposing Orphan Works, the numbers are now estimated at 500,000 voices.

 Yet, some Industry Associations are continuing to claim they speak for us. This is unethical. We've formed this group so that we can work together to fight Orphan Works by being number 81 in the list of groups opposing both Orphan Works Bills that will strip copyright protection.

 The immediate topic is centered around information sharing regarding Orphan Works Legislation.

 Our long-term intent is to share information that is pertinent to our Art and Design careers, our Small Businesses in the Crafting and Hobby Industry and anything that will affect it.

 Because you are a personal friend who we believe opposes S.2913-The Shawn Bentley Orphan Works Act of 2008Ó AND H.R.5889-The Orphan Works Act of 2008, we've invited you to be a charter member of this group.  You do not have to be a designer or artist, just a crafts enthusiast, art lover, or someone who believes in the copyright laws providing protection to what one creates.

I hope everyone is safe this week. Especially our friends in the Texas area where hurricane Ike hit. Wow....I just can't fathom losing everything in one swoop. Please send out prayers and good vibes to those who are going through tough times right now. They might not be affected by Ike, but the financial sector here in the US is taking a banging too! Maybe it is good to be a "starving artist" and not a multi millionaire right now. I just can't afford any gas to go anywhere....thank goodness for Ebay and the Internet!!! Which brings me to online classes!!!!!
