All customers, irrespective of class of travel or Executive Club status, will be charged a fixed, single fee for each checked bag exceeding their free allowance.
The fee will be dependent upon length of journey: Domestic journeys (£30); journeys within Europe (£60); and Inter-Continental journeys (£120) or local equivalent.
Customers on most routes can pre-pay online for their excess baggage and receive a 30% discount on airport charges, when travel is completed by 30 September 2007. The pre-pay facility can be accessed through Manage My Booking. Pre-pay is not available on certain routes, and some credit cards cannot be used as payment methods.
The new 'pre-pay' functionality is now available on ba.com. Anyone travelling after February 13, will be eligible for the 30 per cent discount.
As from February 13, excess baggage will be charged as a fixed fee for each bag that exceeds the customer's free checked baggage allowance. These charges will apply to all customers and will be dependent on the length of their flight.
Robert Boyle, commercial director, said: "As an industry first, customers will be able to pre-pay for their excess baggage online before arriving at the airport. Those doing so will benefit from a 30 per cent discount.
"The ability to pre-pay for excess baggage online will enable customers to not only save money but also valuable time at the airport."
As a package, BA's new checked baggage allowances and excess baggage charges are more generous than previously and also those of its main competitors.
