Question of the DAY: Why So Serious Chuck Bass?

November 18th, 2008

chuck bass

After perusing some recent photos of our favorite Upper East Siders for an upcoming GOSSIP GIRL related article, this TV Addict couldn’t help but wonder two things…

(a) Does Chuck Bass ever smile?
(B) Is Ed Westwick capable of more than one facial expression?

John Noble Shares FRINGE Secrets

November 18th, 2008

john noble fringe

As critics and fans use up valuable bits and bytes debating the finer points of J.J. Abrams latest hit show FRINGE, one pattern has become abundantly clear. Everybody loves Walter.

Which is why this TV Addict was thrilled to have the opportunity to take part in a conference call with actor John Noble, the latest in a long line of Aussie imports who have taken American by storm. See if you can sense a pattern in our line of questions.

Do you know what “The Pattern” is?
John Noble: Do you know, we don’t know. I don’t know what “The Pattern” is. Walter doesn’t, and that kind of works okay for me. I don’t particularly want to know what’s going on in terms of the writers’ minds.

Walter is definitely one of the season’s most well received new characters. Can you talk a little bit about how you approach the part and how much fun it is to play?
It’s as much fun as it looks like. I mean Walter is an absolute hoot to play. It’s obviously got serious aspects to it, but I treat it as a hoot to play the thing. Preparation, well, that’s probably the hardest bit, getting the timing right and doing the preparation on the scientific work. But working on FRINGE is a great job. I mean it’s a great group of people to work with, and amazing scripts from the minds of J.J. Abrams and other people. They’re geniuses. Living inside their heads much be a very strange thing to do because they’re always coming up with something different. Overall, fantastic experience, and thank you for the comment about “Walter.”

Do you know when we’ll learn what “The Pattern” is?
These writers have in mind a plan that could last one, two, three years, or however long it lasts, and they will bring that all to a conclusion at the right time. We can’t reveal everything now because where do you go, so there’s a long way to go.

Could NBC Sudser’s DAYS Be Numbered?

November 18th, 2008

While soap fans were thrilled by NBC’s recent decision to renew DAYS OF OUR LIVES, their excitement was tempered by reports that the soap’s extension would come with a major caveat in the form of massive budget cuts. Now, it appears that the first — and perhaps fatal — cuts will be the deepest, as the show’s most popular couple, Drake Hogestyn and Deidre Hall (who play supercouple John and Marlena) have been let go.

In some corners, this news has been met with the skepticism one might expect given that both actors have been “fired” from the show before in highly touted publicity moves. No DAYS fan needs — or particularly wants — to be reminded of the 2003 storyline in which Marlena was “killed off” after being revealed as the serial killer doing away with her friends and neighbors. Or last year’s tale in which John was “killed off” only to rise from his premature grave a few months later.

The problem is that for fans, this is a lose/lose scenario. If the show — already struggling in the ratings thanks to an endless series of lackluster plots — has really gotten rid of Hogestyn and Hall, it may prove to be a crippling blow. And if this is yet another publicity stunt, fed-up fans may not stick around to see how it unfolds. Given the sad state of daytime affairs, this may not be the best time for so drastic a move.

The TV Addict Infiltrates the Set of 24

November 18th, 2008

24 set

In anticipation of 24’s return this Sunday on FOX, theTVaddict.com is re-posting our report from the set that we ran way back in August. Tune in later in the week for our exclusive interviews with showrunners Manny Coto and Howard Gordon and new President Cherry Jones

The following takes place between 10AM and 1PM.

10:00AM — If six seasons of watching the FOX hit 24 has taught this TV Addict anything, it’s that when Jack Bauer is involved, anything can happen. Not about to be caught off guard in preparing for a visit to the set, I make sure to have not only my passport [useful in getting back into the country after being kidnapped by foreign nationals], but also SPF40 sunblock, a Swiss army knife, two days worth of rations and my iPhone. The last time someone prepared this well for a three-hour tour it was Ginger packing all her gowns before setting sail on the S.S. Minnow.

10:30AM — Although I’m half-expecting Bauer’s black SUV to pull up, instead a white bus arrives to take me — along with several other scoop-seeking reporters — to the set. I suspect at least one of the supposed “journalists” is actually an undercover operative from a rival network hoping to somehow waylay production and push the seventh season premiere to an even later date. Who would do such a thing? Let’s just say there’s a lot of pressure to make sure HARPER’S ISLAND, also slated for a January 2009 debut, is a success for CBS.

11:24AM — Something you never see on 24: An entire hour-long episode devoted to Jack getting from one location to another. Two words: Bored now!

11:35AM — Having finally arrived at our destination, it’s time for another thing you never see on 24: a much-needed bathroom break.

11:45AM — If the staff of CTU were vetted with the care taken to grant me clearance to the set, Nina Meyers would never have infiltrated the place.

11:50AM — What happens when you keep a bunch of entertainment-lovin’ bloggers sequestered together for too long? It’s Nerds Gone Wild as we start quizzing one another on which famous folks have — and have not — done guest gigs on 24. Quick, without zipping over to IMDB, which of the following never clocked in on the show: Zachary Quinto [HEROES], Leighton Meester [GOSSIP GIRL], Richard Burgi [DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES], Tony Plana [UGLY BETTY], Connie Britton [FRIDAY NIGHT LIGHTS], Nestor Carbonell [LOST] or Daniel Dae Kim [LOST]. For geeky bonus points, give the first name of the character each of the others played on 24.?

The TV Addict Extends His 15 Minutes…

November 17th, 2008

TheTVaddict.com just got called up to the big leagues by North America’s preeminent television critic.

Last week, after listening to TV Guide Canada Columnist Amber Dowling both literally and figuratively phone in her special guest appearance on Tim Goodman’s TV Talk Machine, your very own TV Addict decided to take matters into his own hands and throw Amber “Under the Bus.”

In a nutshell, I fired off an email to Mr. Goodman, Podcast partner Joe Garofoli (QB) and Manny (on the knobs) offering my TV expertise should Amber ever get cancelled due to low ratings, far too quiet a voice or the fact that those on “Team Joe” are not a fan of QB being silenced while Amber and Tim flirt over the phone.

5 Mysteries Surrounding Last Night’s DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES

November 17th, 2008

Cell Phone Faux Pas
When Dr. Heller’s phone call to Dave WIlliams interrupted band practice for a good three seconds of gratuitous product placement (see above photo), did anyone else take the opportunity to wonder if Sprint had any idea that their brand was quite literally being left in the hands of Wisteria Lane’s latest crazy? I mean talk about your awkward product placements.

Sibling Rivalry
And since we’re on the subject of awkwardness, it’s exactly how we imagine a family dinner at the Carver residence might feel. After real-life twins Charles and Max Carver, who play fictional Scavo hellians Porter and Preston respectively realize that one of them got the serious short-end of the stick in the story-line department!

Burnt Expectations
Now it’s possible that my expectations for a fire were a little skewed having just returned from Bond’s big blaze in the closing minutes of QUANTUM OF SOLACE. But for Marc Cherry to promise that last night’s blaze would be, “one of the biggest special-effects episodes we’ve ever done, actually more difficult than the tornado” is ridiculous. On what planet does a fire that looked like it could have been contained by a bucket of water qualify as one of the “biggest special-effects” episode DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES has ever done. And when exactly did fire become a special effect?
