Zero 7 - Destiny

posted by Cherryl

This song came out a minute ago. But every time I hear it I'm still struck by how beautiful it is. Can't wait to hear more from these cats. This tune must've been in a movie lately, or commercial. Or sum'in. Cuz I've been hearing it a lot lately.

This song was first released on Dan the Automator's 2002 mix CD Wanna Buy a Monkey?

Sanjaya's American Idol Journey Over

posted by Cherryl
I'm sure this made Simon's day. Sanjaya Malakar got voted off about ten ninutes ago. Then he sang Bonnie Rait's "Let's Give Them Something to Talk About" and in the chorus, which usually goes, "Let's give 'em somethin' to talk about, how about love?", he changed the words to "other than hair" of course in reference to all the hair comments that have been made about him on Idol this season.

Sanjaya's been the butt of endless jokes since he got on Idol, and a constant barrage of critics expressing befuddlement at his longevity on the show.

There's even an Eliminate Sanjaya webpage, and a woman started a hunger strike that was supposed to last until he got booted off.

Dude can actually sing tho, he just couldn't seem to do that well with the songs on Idol. He would be a good fit for a network like Nickelodeon.

Jane's Addiction - Jane Says (Video)

posted by Cherryl
One of my fav rock songs of the nineties - "Jane Says" by Jane's Addiction.

Love the lyrics to this song. I used to be an alcoholic and a drug addict so this song speaks to me in a personal way...I guess like most music I listen to.

EDIT - April 19,2007: This song actually came out in the late eighties, and this version is from the album Janes Addiction Live.

Karl Rove Makes Mockery of Hip Hop

KKKarl Rove, aka "Bush's Brain" jokes about tearing the heads off of small animals, and mocks Hip Hop as "MC Rove". White people kill me.

Tom Tom Club - Genius of Love (Video)

posted by Cherryl

Classic early '80s tune from the Tom Tom Club, a side group of the Talking Heads formed by husband and wife musical duo Chris Frantz and Tina Weymouth.

Tina, as bass player for Talking Heads created many great and memorable bass lines for the group, and it's her playing that drives the song "Genius of Love" as well.

She is truly an inspiration to all women, and a brilliant musician as is her husband.

This song is from their 1981 self-titled release, Tom Tom Club. I love the "James Brown" part, even more now since his passing.

Shabba Ranks - Trailer Load of Girls & Ting-a-Ling (Videos)

posted by Cherryl

Shabba Ranks is one of the top selling dancehall artists of all time, and one of my favorite artists overall.

I've bought most of his albums, including the hard to find "Telephone Tracks" which is basically a compilation of some super hot songs like "Telephone Love", "Just Be Good To Me", etc. Does anyone know if these tracks have videos?

For some reason I think I remember a "Telephone Love" video but I'm not sure.

The song for the video below, "Trailer Load of Girls" is from the 1991 album As Raw As Ever, and Ting-a-Ling is from the 1992 release Xtra Naked.

As Raw as Ever won the 1992 Grammy for Best Reggae Album, making Ranks the first dancehall artist to win a Grammy.

I love love love dancehall. Some might argue with me on this, but I view dancehall music and the culture surrounding it as one that celebrates the beauty of women, and Black women in particular.

Watch the Ting-A-Ling vid here - embedding is turned off for this video.

Support The Web's Only Black Owned Search Engine!

posted by Cherryl
Here's info on Black Web Portal from a blast I received recently.
As some of you might know, a dynamic young African-American Internet duo, Rob and Roz Rucker have created a brand new search engine and portal site called The BlackWebPortal.com.

The site is designed with African-Americans in mind. Right now their viewer-ship is the low thousands. They need to cross the hundreds of thousands barrier to have any real chance of keeping this site online at all. Some of you are thinking...why does it matter?

It matters because BlackVoices is wholly owned by the Tribune Company; Black Families by Cox Communications; BlackPlanet.com by an Asian company; and Soul City HBO by AOL-Times/Warner.

BlackWebPortal is the only site that is 100% African-American owned. The BlackWebPortal needs all of us to start emailing our friends, relatives, etc., all over the world to start using the resources at the BlackWebPortal. The important thing is that they need help getting the word out about this site. Let's help
this site out by visiting and seeing what they have to offer. So please tell EVERYONE about the Black Web Portal. Don't just bookmark it for yourself. Spread the news!

This is a new millennium! We must begin truly supporting black technology efforts in the same way we cheer on our movie and athletic stars. If we don't, they'll end up having to do the same as other black web sites by getting assistance from elsewhere, thereby losing the original flavor they have.

PLEASE HELP SPREAD THE WORD!

http://www.blackwebportal.com

I just tried using it to search for some test terms. Most turned up zero results, for words like say, "Cherryl Aldave" when searching for that brings up results in Google.

Still the site is recommended because it features news and announcements catering to the Af-Am community. I'll definitely be checking it with frequency.

I would be checking it on the daily if the site had a recognizable RSS feed. I searched the whole page and couldn't find one.

Great idea though, and I wish them much success.

Thanks to Thy for the tip.

A Message To You Rudy

Some good skankin music from the Specials, one of my fave Ska groups.

I haven't posted a lot of Ska on this blog but I'll start posting more soon. For some reason I think a lot of Black kids think Ska is like "White music" - they seem totally unaware that most of the first "rudies" were Jamaican Blacks.

Sister Nancy's "Bam Bam" is probably one of my top ten favorite songs. I have the album this song comes from, One, Two..., which is actually hard to come by these days. One of my favorites. Truly a record you can play from front to back with complete satisfaction.

Sister Nancy is too rude!! I absolutely love her. She is one of my "dream interviews" - an interview I don't feel my collection of interviews as a music journalist would be complete without.

From the moment she says "Selassie I" in this video the tiny hairs on the back of my neck stood up. Her brother Brigadier Jerry also appears in this video. One of the best female DJs to ever rock a dancehall.

This performance was taken from a concert called "Return of the Dancehall Gladiators".

Murder She Wrote (Video)

posted by Cherryl
A hot one from Chaka Demus and Pliers. I have this cd somewhere. I bought it right after it came out. Love this video. Love the gold outfit!! That is some type of flamboyant outfit that I would wear. Watch the vid and see what I mean.

I absolutely love Jamaican style. Always wanted to go to the island...maybe one day I'll get my chance. Love the earrings in this video!! And yes, ya girl rocks the big bamboo earrings as well.

I'm getting another hole in my ears soon so I can sport two pair at a time like I did back in the late 1980's. I had two holes before, then one set of holes closed up because I never used them...double earrings went seriuosly out of style in the 90s!!

Now I'm getting my second holes back - multi earrings are back in full force now, just see Fergie at the Grammys. I also had one at the very top of my ear that I may get back soon also - don't think I'll do the nose ring thing again though. That hole is closed for business and perhaps for the better!

Anyway here's the vid.

Is iTunes Cheating Customers And Artists?

posted by Cherryl
I've used iTunes a few times, and yeah the sound quality of the AAC files really sucks.

This Downhill Battle page makes iTunes look super sheisty by detailing how they overcharge consumers for a product with reduced quality, and undercompensate artists:
Apple takes a 35% cut from every song and every album sold, a huge amount considering how little they have to do. Record labels receive the other 65% of each sale. Of this, major label artists will end up with only 8 to 14 cents per song, depending on their contract. Many of them will never even see this paltry share because they have to pay for producers and recording costs, both of which can be enormous.
Damn you, iTunes!

Let's just say my musical tastes are quite diverse. Love the way this video starts out too. One day I want to direct a music video or two. That would be fukkin kewl.

Dem Frame Up George Lindo Up In Bradford Toun...

posted by Cherryl
Linton Kwesi Johnson is one my favorite poets.

When he first started writing poetry, he "didn't believe that at that time a black poet could have the luxury of art for art's sake."

This is how I feel about my writing, and why as a Black woman I write about the things I do. Not to say there's never room for art for art's sake...but I agree with the heart of what Johnson says in that quote.

Here he is performing the poem "It Dread Inna Inglan", a poem he wrote for George Lindo, a young Black man who was "fitted up" as they across the pond by the police in 1978. Damn his eyes look 'moked out...

Here are the words:

Dem frame up George Lindo up in Bradford Toun
but di Bradford blacks dem a rally roun
mi seh dem frame up George Lindo up in Bradford Toun
but di Bradford Blacks dem a rally roun

Maggi Tatch on di go

an' Black British

Red Bull Word Clash Film

posted by Cherryl
This performance poetry film was made in early 2006, but has been getting a lot of buzz again lately. I decided to post it here for anyone who's interested.

As I said here when I first blogged about this film, people who say they "don't like poetry" like the spoken word stuff in the Word Clash.

If you're looking for alternative media please make sure to support the artists in this film by buying their music/poetry and books and supporting them when they come to your town.

Carlos Andres Gomez btw, one of the featured poets in this film, may look familiar to those who saw Inside Man.

If you can't watch the video you can download it from Kevin Harrison's website.

Is This Jamie Kennedy's Version of Hip Hop in "Blackface"?

posted by Cherryl
If this isn't racist, it was definitely misguided. What was he thinking? Some Whites just don't get that many Black people still aren't ready to be "imitated" this way, even as a joke.

(You Make Me Feel) Mighty Real

posted by Cherryl
WARNING: *This video contains scenes of crossdressing and same sex bumpin' 'n grindin', or what some in my (red)neck of the woods like to call "some faggoty shit". Those who often experience "funny feelings" (i.e. unintentional erections) when viewing such material may not want to watch this as it may compromise your already fragile sexual identity.*

I love this song, "Mighty Real" by the late Sylvester.

I haven't done any research about this song, but I've always taken him saying "mighty real" to mean feeling like a "real" woman, a feeling I know resonates with many who live a "drag queen" lifestlye.

I love the energy of this song, and of house music in general and will be posting more soon. This is the 12" version, so it's like six minutes long. Damn, remember disco mixes? Songs now usually max out at about three minutes, while some disco mixes where like...at least fifteen minutes for some songs.

The people in the club in the video are really getting their life, baby! That's what house is all about.

Please support Sylvester's legacy and work by buying his music.
