First European Manufacturer Brings Wireless USB Set To Market

The Wireless USB adapter set allows European users to wirelessly connect from their notebook or desktop PC to a range of USB devices, which can be placed anywhere in the room.

The adapter set, to be sold in retail centers in Italy, France, Germany, Spain, and the U.K, under the Olidata brand, allows users to turn their existing wired USB devices to Wireless USB devices and conveniently access them from anywhere in the room. The solution, consisting of a pair of USB adapters - one for the device and one of the PC - brings wireless connectivity to USB devices such as hard disk drives, printers, digital still cameras, camcorders, CD/DVD writers and hubs. Call for Papers - ICUWB 2009 - UWB Conference in Canada

ICUWB 2009 LOGOOrganized by the University of British Columbia the IEEE 2009 International Conference on Ultra Wideband (UWB) will be held in Vancouver, Canada, on September 9 - 11, 2009. This conference provides a forum for the latest UWB systems, technologies, and applications in both microwave and millimeter wave bands. ICUWB is the leading annual conference on Ultrawideband (UWB) based solutions for communications, radar, and localization systems operating in both microwave and millimeter wave bands and over cable. It focuses on the latest advances in UWB technology, current and future applications ranging from UWB communication for personal area and sensor networks to UWB-based localization and positioning systems to UWB vehicular radar and imaging systems, and standardization and regulation for UWB transmission. Alereon AL5000 Family PHY Certified for WiMedia Bandgroup 6

Alereon’s AL5000 Wireless USB chipset family is announced as official WiMedia PHY test bed for bandgroup BG1 and BG3 and is among the first certifications to support the WiMedia Spectrum Extension Release.

(via Press Release from Alereon - November 5, 2008) Austin, Texas - Alereon, Inc., the Certified Wireless USB technology leader for Worldwide Ultra Wideband (UWB) WiMedia solutions, today announced that the WiMedia Alliance has officially certified Alereon’s AL5000 Wireless USB chipset as one of the first UWB physical layer chipsets (PHYs) for operation in bandgroup BG6 (7.4 to 9.0GHz). The AL5000 Family has been shipping in volume production since the third quarter 2008. The chips from Alereon are among the first certifications to support the WiMedia Spectrum Extension Release (SER) announced in August.

Solidifying the company’s leadership position in the UWB market, Ripcord2 is also the first single-chip solution to obtain this certification for Band Group BG6. In addition, the WiMedia Alliance also announced that Ripcord2 has been qualified as an official PHY test beds for Band Groups BG1 and BG3, which will enable Independent Test Labs (ITLs) to conduct WiMedia Certification testing in the near future.

WiMedia Certifies First PHYs for High Band Operation

WiMedia Alliance is paving the way for global UWB adoption.
Qualification of PHY test beds presages independent test labs.

(via Press Release from WiMedia Alliance - November 4, 2008) San Ramon, California - The WiMedia Alliance today announced the certification of the first three Ultra Wideband (UWB) physical layer chipsets (PHYs) to support the WiMedia Spectrum Extension Release (SER) announced in August. The chips from Alereon, Realtek and Staccato Communications support operation in Band Groups 1 and 3 (3.1 to 4.8GHz and 6.3 to 7.9GHz, respectively). The Alereon and Staccato chips also support operation in Band Group 6 (7.4 to 9.0GHz).

“The certification of these PHYs from member companies is a critical step towards establishing UWB as the worldwide standard for Personal Area Networks (PANs) in the PC, CE and mobile market segments,” said Stephen Wood, WiMedia president. (more…)
